Android Guide to Making a Google Account

Creating a Google Account is one of the basic tasks required to set-up you're android phone. This account allows you to access the Android Market and download apps, it also allows you to use the inbuilt Google apps on your phone, like Google Maps. A Google account also backs up your contacts and other data, so that if you lose your phone, you can download all of you're data on to another one.

Setting up this account is really easy, just follow these simple steps!

1. You can set up a Google account in several different ways: when prompted the first time you turn on you're handset, by opening the Gmail app, and by opening android market. You will be presented with this screen. Just click 'Create'.

2. On the second screen enter you're first and second name into the appropriate boxes, then enter a username into the box with @googlemail.com next to it. Your username should be something you will remember and it will also be the start of your email address. For example if you choose peter23, your email address would be Peter23 @ googlemail.com. When you are done click next at the bottom of the screen.

3. On this page you need to enter a password for your Google Account, it should be at least 8 characters in length and contain one number. Type your chosen password again in the second box t0 confirm it. Then click the next button at the bottom to continue.

4. On this page you are required to choose a secret question and answer that can be used to verify your identity in the case that you forget your Google account details. Choose a question from the list, and then write your answer in the custom box. You can optionally add a secondary email which will also help to recover a lost account - this can be any email address. When done, click the next button.

5. Google will ask that you accept their terms and conditions, to do so simply use the accept button (it may be necessary to scroll to the bottom of the terms). You will then be asked to verify your humanity by entering a code into a text box.

6. If all is well you will see this screen and your account will be successfully created. Bear in mind that you will need an active internet connection. You can now access Gmail and the android market, have fun!

Advantages of an Android TV Box

Android TV boxes have suddenly become very popular. Even though companies like Apple and Roku have sold many set-top boxes, another option has hit the market - the Android TV box. Also known as a 'Google TV' or XBMC Steaming player, these devices are simple. They are available for as little as $60 and as much as $100.

This android device is a small box shaped product that is about 5 inches wide and 2 inches tall.

This product has access to apps and functions that you can find on other android devices. However, it is able to run a variety of Android apps, games and even a web browser.

Advantages of buying Android TV Box

The question is should you buy an Android TV box? With the variety of functions it can perform, including downloading apps from Google Play store, you won't be able to stay away from it for very long. They are reliable and their hardware is just as good as the Roku or Apple TV. The supplied remote is great and they are able to play a 1080p video pretty smoothly.

These devices are a great investment for people who love to tweak their definition of fun. People who only want to watch videos can buy other simpler devices. It's like the difference between having a mobile with push buttons and one with a touch screen. Which technology would you prefer?

Because of popular demand, the market for Android TV boxes is growing. But the problem is where to find quality products, as most of the ones available on the market are fairly lackluster. You can, however, buy them from online shops. There are many Chinese products that have come onto the market. They are cheap, not a deal breaker and easily run for a long time.

This device has an advantage over an HDMI stick. The box has extra connectivity options, while for the stick you need at least a USB hub for it to be useful.

The main reason why the Android TV box is more popular is because other devices come with a lot of restrictions. These devices cater to specific platforms only.

Understand your requirement

It is important to know that not all Android TV boxes are created equally. So, you may have to buy a box that supports over 1GB RAM, if that is what you require. Basically, you need to understand what functionalities you are looking at before spending money.

10 Free Android Apps That Will Actually Make You Money While Shopping!

Shopping is either pure bliss or torture depending on who you ask. Regardless of which end of the spectrum you are on, Android apps will help you save money and allow you to become a more efficient shopper (which I'm sure appeals to most of you). So what does that entail? It'll give the shopaholics more bang for their buck, which is never a bad thing. Perhaps even more importantly, these Android apps will provide shopaphobes what they really crave- less time in the stores!

The pure power and functionality of these Android apps can really make shopping virtually an all new experience. No matter if these apps function as a shopping list, database, storefront or a supplemental knowledge source, they're all squarely aimed at one thing: if you use them, they will save you money!

You're getting a feeling like Android shopping apps, in general, might just help you, right? Well here are 10 Android apps that will save you money while they help you fulfill all your shopping needs and desires. Oh and did I mention that all these ten are completely FREE to download?

SnapTell

Want to know more about an item you saw on the rack? Just use SnapTell to scan the barcode of any CD, DVD, book or video game and you will be able to get all the information you could possibly need. What type of information? Well, if you just want some more cursory information, that'll work. Most notably, if you want to see how the price stacks up to other distributors, it can do that for you in seconds. This app could be a big time money-saver for you if you take the time to use it before you make that next media purchase!

Key Ring Reward Cards

This is a very handy app to consolidate all your clutter in your purse/wallet while ensuring that you don't lose valuable reward/loyalty cards. How does it work? All you do is take a snapshot of the barcode of your reward card (just about any decent sized company with a rewards program is in the database- over 650 programs) and enter some basic information about the store. That's it; you're now ready to use your phone as your reward card at that store in the future by pulling up your reward information from that store on this Android app. It's probably not for non-techies or those who crave extreme simplicity. It is, however, a great idea and technology that will no doubt get crisper in the future.

If you don't mind carrying all your reward cards and potentially losing one or two along the way (and having to suffer through the wait to replace the card), this free Android app sounds like a waste of time. But, if the extra inch of not-so-soft plastic padding for your rump (or the misuse of perfectly good purse space- not to mention the potential inability to use your chic tiny purse out shopping) isn't idyllic, this app is worth the few minutes to download and get everything set up properly.

OurGroceries

This is the perfect app for the happy, busy family of Android phone users. It allows the kids to endlessly add all their necessary foods. When the items are purchased, they can be removed from the list (on all the Android phones it's registered to) and then, 4 hours later, they can easily be added back onto the list! Joking aside, this is a great app to have for the new-age hyper busy, hyper tech families that want to become more efficient.

Hey, it costs a lot of money to keep purchasing that extra loaf of bread that your husband/wife (or even you- thanks to that undecided hmmm, don't we need bread moment even though you just bought two loaves yesterday- yes you're not alone!) just picked up and will end up turning green before anyone has a chance to make a sandwich with it.

OI Shopping list

To me, this app, fully named the OpenIntents Shopping list, is like the OurGroceries for the single folks out there. Not to say a family wouldn't benefit from this app, it just has more features and it's not a perfect fit like the other app is for families that need a simple solution to keep up on their latest shopping needs. That being said, this app is a powerful workhorse and can really end up saving you countless hours and some decent cash at year's end.

US Yellow Pages Search

This is one of the more useful free Android apps available and I'll be honest, it doesn't 100% fit with the theme of helping you save money while shopping. I could argue that it does, but for simplicity, I'll just use an old clich: Time is Money! Saving some time is just as good as saving cash on those busy days out and about. Having this app on your Android phone is like having 300 super-thick Yellowbooks from all over the US crammed into your back pocket. Not a bad thing if you travel a decent amount or enjoy living outside of your house. It's just a great resource to have on hand for those times when you need to find a business's number fast.

eBay

This official app brings eBay to your Android phone. It's kind of crazy, but I think I like this UI better than the actual website on my computer. I don't know if that's a good thing or a bad. Nonetheless, it gives you an idea that this Android app was developed correctly and really hits the mark. That is, if you're an eBay fan; if you're not, sorry!

Amazon.com

Similar to eBay's Android app, this beauty from Amazon brings all the functionality from the full-sized website to your Android phone. It's amazing how seamless this transition appears for these giant resellers. This is a great thing for us though!

Craigslist

The last of the GIANT resellers' Android apps on this list, I promise. Well, kind of: if you don't include Groupon in your list of "resellers", I haven't lied to you. So, if you've ever used Craigslist, you know how utterly important it is to check out a potential "killer item" within 5 minutes of it being posted and subsequently be the first handful of people to contact the seller to have any hopes of actually ending up with it in your possession.

That being said, if you use Craigslist and you have an Android phone, YOU NEED THIS APP NOW! Haha, sorry to scream, but if you're going to use this portal of goodness with the hopes of eventually buying something you want/need, you have to have instant access to newly posted items. The only way to do that (I'm taking liberties assuming you aren't a recluse and on your home computer 24/7) is to have access "on-the-go" to instant notifications for your set of items that interest you and also a way to view them. This app performs both of these necessary actions and does them well.

*Please, for your sake, if you want to be the guy (gal) bragging about the awesome deal you got on the "coolest thing in the world" instead of the not-so-happy version of you regrettably telling the story about "the one that got away" to anyone who will listen, download this app!*

Groupon

This is the official app from the immensely popular and rapidly growing Groupon website. This site has a "cult-like" following (not in a bad way!) which actually benefits its users. Essentially, the more people that use their services, the more offers are presented to the users and that helps all of us save a good amount of money! This free Android app ensures that you're never out of the "Groupon loop" and you'll have the opportunity to take advantage of the appealing offers wherever you may be.

The Coupons App

Another money-saving coupon app? Yes! That's all I can say- the prospects of saving a buck in this economy is a powerful force it seems. I'm almost a bit surprised at myself that I didn't completely inundate this "shopping list" with coupon apps (patting myself on the shoulder for spreading out the love). If only I could go back in time to 1989 and use this app instead of clipping 500-plus coupons from the Sunday paper (for my mom). Well those were good times- minus the paper cuts.

What's this Android app going to do for you? Anything and everything coupon related; it brings the coupons with you on your phone and allows you to find new ones even while you're at the store! That's pretty awesome for those of us not commanding "Top CEO" salaries...

Honorable Mention:

There's only one free Android app that I would consider putting on this list. The reason is because it's probably the most important app for everyone to download today. I consider it more of a "mandatory app" than an Android shopping app and that's why it's here.

The app I'm speaking of is the Barcode Scanner. Among other things, it allows you to browse the web on your computer and take a photo of the QR Code of an app you're interested in downloading. Once the code is processed (which takes very little time- talking seconds), the corresponding Android app's download page appears in the Google Marketplace! It's that simple and works like a charm once you get past the short "operator error" stage that plagues most of us.

New Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich Features That Make Your Phone a Joy to Use

A complete and harmonious combination of two substances can create a complete and beautiful result. In like manner, the natural sweetness of Android 3.0 Honeycomb and the crispy layers of Android 2.3 Gingerbread have resulted in a new, tastier treat for Android smartphones and Android tablets--Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich.

Google has been aiming to unite the multiple Android versions into just one version so that one and only one Android runs on whatever device--be it an Android smartphone, Android tablet, Android portable media player, Android TV, Android watch, or wherever else the little green robot can make waves.

What glad tidings does Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS) bring to its users? What better experiences can we expect from it? Read on to know more about how Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich is being true to Google's description of it: "the best Android we've ever made yet."

Multi-tasking Button

Android 4.0 includes a virtual button that allows you to browse and instantly switch to apps you recently used. The list displays thumbnail images of apps--instead of just icons--so you can see which part of the apps are currently working in the background.

And, if you want to throw away or discard an item on the list, simply flick the thumbnail in order to remove it from the list.

Instant Screenshots with Button Press

There are many instances in which you'd like to share to others what is currently displayed on your screen. There are also times when you just need to save a screenshot for later use. In previous versions of Android, you could take screenshots by installing apps for that purpose. In Android 4.0, it's a built-in feature.

By holding the Power and Volume Down buttons together, your Android smartphone lets you capture screen images instantly.

Improved Notification Bar

There are several improvements that Google has done to the Notification Bar in Android 4.0. For instance, it can now be pulled down from the Lock Screen. Another is that you can discard items from the list of notifications by simply flicking an item to the right. This means that you can remove items on the Notification Bar one by one.

In previous versions of Android, it's either you clear all notifications with one tap or you leave all of them untouched.

The Notification Bar no longer shows a grid layout of recently used apps. Instead, in Ice Cream Sandwich, those apps are shown as a vertical-scrolling strip of app thumbnails. You can also directly control music playback right on the Notification Bar.

Improved Text and Voice Input

The stock keyboard in Android 4.0 has been given more love. It is now faster and more responsive compared to previous versions of Android. The suggestion strip is more accurate now and also includes an in-line spell checker. With one tap, you can select suggested words or add new words to the dictionary.

Copy-and-paste functionality has also been made easier. Just tap and hold down on the selected word, and drag the handles to highlight the selected words. Then you can select "Copy and Paste" from the popup menu, or simply drag the highlighted chunk of text to wherever you wish to insert it.

Google has also incorporated voice-to-text input in Ice Cream Sandwich. Just speak, and the phone converts your spoken words into text. It's a great way to easily and effortlessly "type" text. With Ice Cream Sandwich, voice input is more accurate and can also translate expressions into symbols.

It also accounts for pauses, so you don't have to press anything while thinking of an appropriate response.

Face Unlock

Say goodbye to passwords, PIN codes, and patterns. Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich has personalized phone unlocking much further. With the new Face Unlock feature, an Android smartphone or Android tablet can now recognize the face of its owner.

Just by focusing your face clearly on the secondary front-facing camera of your device, you can unlock your phone instantly. No typing needed. No need to remember passwords. Just look into the camera and let the device recognize you.

Data Usage Monitoring

Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich also includes a new graphical display of the data your Android phone is using. You can set warnings for exceeding data usage limits, as well as set how much background data each app can use. Users can have more control over their Android device with this neat option in ICS.

Android 4.0 also comes with improved apps, which can be categorized into three: the core apps (i.e., Google mobile apps such as Android Browser, Gmail, and Calendar), Photos, and People.

Android Beam

Support for Near Field Communication (NFC) is baked into Android 4.0, and Google has made sure that Ice Cream Sandwich has a ready app to leverage the technology.

Called Android Beam, the app revolutionizes the way that people share files and data among one another. With NFC and Android Beam, one can send a file to another user simply by bringing two Android phones close to each other and tapping the phones against each other. Any file can be shared in this manner--photos, documents, maps, apps, bookmarks, and so on.

Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich surely packs a fresh new look and exciting new features that will truly make your device perform better as a smartphone. With Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich soon replacing the older versions of Android on recent Android smartphones, these new features will eventually start a new wave of more convenient and more efficient use of Android smartphones and Android tablets.

Android L vs iOS 8

Share About Android-The world needs no introduction regarding the rivalry between iOS and Android smart phones. While the applications and facilities provided by both Android and iOS operating systems is a lot different from each other, but the world smart phone customer base gets hugely affected with each new launch from these giants. While iOS devices are known for their high- end modern smart phones, the Android operating system made it possible for the people to have access to all advanced technologies at a range of affordable prices.

Every time a new device from either of the manufacturers is introduced in the market, the whole world eagerly makes comparisons between them. This trend is being followed for the last few years and it does not seem to end anytime soon. With the release of Android L as well as iOS 8 in the coming fall, this rivalry is expected to get a new boost and the famous war between these two is surely going to bloom.

Looking at this persisting rivalry, how can we stop ourselves from making comparisons between Android L and iOS 8? Without wasting any more time, let us take a closer look at Android L (running on Nexus 5) and iOS 8 (running on iPhone 5S).

Lock Screens and Home Screens

Taking a look at the lock screen of Android L, it has gone through some commendable changes. Earlier we had to pull down the screen from the top in order to read the notifications, but now we can see the notifications right in the middle of the screen. This feature, somehow, seems to have been adopted from iOS. By double- tapping a notification in Android L, that particular app will get launched and in order to dismiss it, all you need to do is swipe it to either of the two sides. While a swipe on iOS 8 can be used to reply to an email or for marking it as READ. These features are well- justified in both Android L and iOS 8.

In iOS, the notification light will be on for long enough so that the user is able to read the message, while in Android L the RGB notification light will go off. Also, there is a shortcut to the Phone application present on the lock screen of Android L, something that is not there on iOS 8. But the camera application is present on the lock screens of both Android L and iOS 8.

Interestingly, iOS 8 has room for third- party widgets in its notification area, while there is no such provision in Android L. As a consumer, this is going to surprise the future users of Android L. By simply pulling down the notification panel in iOS 8, users can get access to these third- party widgets.

Distinctively, the home screens in both Android L and iOS 8 have been kept similar to their earlier versions. Android L is a great choice for people who want to personalize their smart phones and iOS 8 is great for people who want the personalized look, but with a touch of simplicity.

Contacts, Keyboard, Dialer

The keyboard in Android L has been slightly modified but altogether, it is no different from a regular keyboard that we have earlier used on Android devices. All the features, such as auto- correct, emoticons and word prediction are very much a part of Android L. But Apple has efficiently included some very remarkable word- predictions in iOS 8. The context and purpose of the ongoing conversation is understood by an algorithm, which then makes some really smart predictions.

Android L's Phone app has gone through some commendable changes. All the starred contacts are now placed conveniently at the bottom edge of the screen, hence giving quick access to them. Meanwhile, the Search and Last Dialled contacts are at the top. On the other hand, no changes have been made to the Phone app in iOS 8, which is understandable. Still Apple leads here due to features, such as blocking texts and calls from desired contacts.

In Android L, the contact list is compact as compared to before, with little spaces between each contact and a small profile picture. While in iOS 8, there is no space for a profile picture, probably because the developers know that most of them are going to remain blank.

Multitasking, Notification panel, Quick controls

Android L has done a commendable job in listing the notifications according to their priority. The most important ones are placed at the top and so on. For instance, all emails are now placed at the top while updates are at the bottom. However, Apple has taken a more organized path and by pulling the notification panel down, weather reports and user's daily schedule will also get displayed. Notifications are now placed separately and the order in which these are listed can be changed by going into the device's Settings.

Like before, a Quick Controls menu is present in the pull- down panel of Android L. This new design is definitely a plus- point along with the brightness slider and an added toggle for adjusting the orientation of the screen. Similarly, the Quick Control menu in iOS 8 is also loaded with commendable features. However, one has to be careful while scrolling down any webpage as this might pull the panel downwards.

Camera and Gallery

In Android L, the Camera app from Google has been used as usual. You can easily access this app from the Play Store. This app needs no introduction and it is known for its easy to use interface. The built- in camera modes in Android L are supposed to satisfy every casual user. On the other hand, iOS 8 camera certainly has a few good features to boost about. Shooting time- lapse videos, controlling focus, self- timer and independent exposure are some of the features in iOS 8.

In Android L, the Photos app enables us to view the photos. There are two separate tabs for managing photos, Highlights and one containing all pictures. This app has automatic backup and arranges your photos in different folders, depending on their date. There are various editing tools and you do not have to be a PRO to use them. Similarly, iOS 8 also arranges your pictures by date and time. Backup is also available to ensure that you never lose any of them. The editing features in iOS 8 are certainly fewer as compared to Android L, but the simplicity and ease of use is definitely something to appreciate.

Conclusion:

These are just some of the features that we have drawn comparison between. However, both Android L and iOS 8 are destined to undergo some changes before their launch date. It is entirely up to the users to decide which smart phone to invest in. Looking at the current trends, Android and Apple are again going to be at loggerheads.

Wireless Headphones Benefits

While some say that wired headphones are better because they can deliver high quality audio others say that the wireless counterparts are much better than the wired ones. What do you think? Let's take a look at some of the factors which might set the wireless headphones apart from others.

Easy to handle & Safe

The absence of wires makes these headphones very easy to handle. Without any wires, you don't have to worry about those pesky little pocket trolls messing with your headphones. Moreover without having wires, you can be at ease around your kids and/or your pets. That being said you don't have to worry about anything chewing on the cables or wires. Note only are these headphones safe for you but they are good for your kids as they can't accidentally strangle themselves with something that isn't there.

Convenience

It would have been a great thing to start with this, for wireless headphones are most convenient. When one is on the move and/or doing something that requires the involvement of both your hands, these headphones come in very handy. They allow the user to freely tend to their business like taking calls or cooking, maybe even cleaning up the house.

Optimized power consumption

Contrary to what others think, wireless headphones don't hog much power. That being said, you don't have to live with a power supply to charge your headphones every now and then. Although there might be some which are drained of power very quickly, but most of them don't even require huge amounts of power. While some drain their own power, others drain you're the life out of your tethered device. Now the latest products in this category are specifically designed to provide with long battery life.

There are three main categories of wireless headphones. They are:

RF headphones

These headphones make use of a simple predisposed channel, allowing the user to rock to their music without any kind of interruption and enhanced audio quality.

Bluetooth headphones

Although these are prevalent in the market these days, they are inferior to the RF headphones, as these are easily affected by any active Bluetooth device in the vicinity. Although their price is comparatively very less than the RF headphones, they can't compete with them in terms of quality.

Multi-channel headphones

The headphones are equipped with more than one channel, so if one fails to satisfy your requirement, you can switch to the other. This may help you reduce interference or totally remove it from the equation. Allowing you to jam to your songs without much hassle.
